Work on the extensive public housing redevelopment project in Marghera, between Via del Lavoratore and Via Case Nuove, presented last April, will continue until 2029. In total, the municipal administration has planned an investment of €9 million to create new housing and more livable public spaces.
Councilor for Social Cohesion Ermelinda Damiano inspected the sites involved this morning. “We are renovating existing housing, building new units, and experimenting with an innovative co-housing model to provide mutual support for those in vulnerable economic condition,” she explains, specifying that “urban regeneration involves not only buildings, but also spaces: this is why we have chosen to enhance greenery, expand usable areas, and create meeting and social spaces.”
Co-housing in Via del Lavoratore
The most innovative project, which is about to enter the operational phase, is located on Via del Lavoratore: a residential model that integrates public housing, co-housing, and social housing. The Veneto Region has approved the preliminary design for the first phase and, in recent days, published the tender that will allow the contract application process, which will be managed by Insula S.p.A. [a public company that works with the City of Venice on public housing and property management – Ed.] to begin. The first phase, which has already been funded, involves a cost of €3.5 million (including demolition) and will lead to the construction of a building with six co-housing units, aimed at families experiencing hardship. The apartments will be independent yet integrated into a community characterized by shared spaces.
The second phase will include the construction of 20 new public housing units (ERP) [Public Housing – Ed.] with associated common areas. A third building with six social housing units will complete the project, funded directly by the City of Venice with a €1.2 million allocation. The entire complex will be built according to environmental sustainability criteria, with low-impact buildings, 1,000 square meters of green space, and 200 square meters of covered common areas, intended for educational, recreational, and socializing activities.
ERP in Via Case Nuove
The program also includes the ERP complex on Via Case Nuove, consisting of six buildings for a total of 72 apartments. Of these, 22 units will undergo new renovations, while the remainder have already been redeveloped in recent years. The redevelopment process is now complete, and once again, it also includes the outdoor spaces: the project envisions a significant increase in green areas and usable garden space, the reorganization of pedestrian walkways and internal traffic, and the reorganization of parking areas.
The timeline calls for the completion of the co-housing building by 2027, while the entire program (Via del Lavoratore and Via Case Nuove) is expected to be completed by 2029.
