In the declarations of affection and deep respect released today by the outgoing mayor for his successor and former councilor Simone Venturini, there was also room for a more comprehensive assessment and a thank you to the opposition leader in this election campaign, Andrea Martella.
“Yesterday I called and thanked Andrea Martella for his poise, for his statements, for the way he behaved,” Brugnaro said. “I find the criticisms directed at him unfair; the truth is that someone had painted him a situation that wasn’t true. Just as the idea that nothing was done, even for the historic center, is unrealistic. It is a pleasure to see that people notice,” said the now former mayor, who noted that he has a 1,300-page book ready for publication detailing all the activities of the past 11 years.
“I think the citizens have done something that goes beyond the simple proclamation of a mayor; they have expressed a strong will,” said Brugnaro, who had repeatedly expressed his fear that the work of these eleven years could be undermined by a center-left victory. “It’s a lesson for the parties: citizens don’t follow directions, at least in Venice that’s how it goes; it’s our history.”
The outgoing mayor, who reiterated his desire to be remembered “as an honest person”, responded to a specific question: “I have no advice for Simone; he must believe in himself. They’ve accused me of being a ‘boss’, but that’s not the case. It’s right to listen and then make decisions, to be a decision-maker. Simone shouldn’t be afraid to speak his mind and should focus on what’s best for the city. Citizens need answers now; we need a vision, a plan, of course, and of course it exists, but we also need immediate action.” Brugnaro made it clear that he welcomes the change in leadership: “It’s right that there are two terms. I was impressed with Simone’s energy. It’s right that there is a path forward; things are always meant to evolve. I’m leaving the city in truly excellent hands.”
