Another school in Venice is closing. Another symbol of those who measure the city by its residents and its children is lost. Another memory of our childhood will be erased. Another building will be converted to “other activities”.

The Bartolomea Capitanio kindergarten, active for over 100 years, will not reopen its doors after September 2020. The 2019 – 2020 school year is assured (though with cuts in teaching staff) to ‘ease’ the transition, but parent will nevertheless be forced to act before than to find other kindergartens and nursery schools for their children.

The closing of this school in Venice is for many a bolt of lightning from a clear sky, but the employees have understood for some time that ‘something was in the air’.

The Bartolomea Capitanio is made up of three kindergarten classes and one nursery school. On normal school days there are over 60 children in attendance. In 2007 the sisters turned over the scholastic activities to the Associazione Centro Italiano Femminile. The school is considered to be a model institution, and the waitlist for admission is always large.

It appears that economic reasons are behind the closure, problems serious enough that the teachers have not received their salaries for months. The teachers decided to continue until June out of a sense of responsibility. The building – property of the convent of the Suore di Carità – will be restored and then will likely go to other uses.

And Venice loses another historic piece of its culture and its social roots.
