Comitato Marghera Libera e Pensante holds a sit-in on Saturday September 7 in front of the headquarters of the Regional Civil Protection to call for “Civil protection”
September 7, 2024
A sit-in to call for “Civil protection” took place on the morning of September 7 in the Cita district of Marghera, directly in front of the headquarters of the Veneto Civil Protection, a place that has become familiar to Venetians because it is the place from which Region President Luca Zaia broadcast his daily bulletins during the Covid pandemic.
The reason for the protest is about social and health services again, but this time it has nothing to do with Covid. Rather it is about the battle that Comitato Marghera Libera e Pensante has been waging to call for more services to stem the problem of drug dealing and address the social consequences related to drug consumption.
The Ser.D. service is especially under accusation [Ed. Note: according to the Italian Department for Anti-Drug Policy, “The Ser.D. are the public services for pathological addictions of the National Health System, established by law 162/90. The Ser.D. are responsible for primary prevention, treatment, prevention of related pathologies, rehabilitation and social and work reintegration in the sector of pathological addictions. Close and synergic collaboration with therapeutic communities, municipal administrations and volunteer organizations represents a fundamental element of their action.”] “We have been denouncing the serious situation that the Mestre Ser.D. has been in for some time: located in a problematic area and with inadequate spaces, and constantly understaffed due to a lack of doctors and operators, whose numbers should be at least doubled to cope with the scale of the emergency we are experiencing, with very long waiting lists for therapeutic communities”.
“The Veneto Region, in line with the ‘Veneto model’ of healthcare, widely trumpeted by Governor Zaia and Health Councilor Lanzarin”, the Committee continues, “chooses to keep a vital system such as the ser.D. in this situation. And once again, the responsibilities of Brugnaro and his administration in this case are serious, as they have not engaged in any initiatives with the Region. The cuts in services and welfare in general, the weakening of what remains of those services and the meager funding allocated to them are choices that we citizens pay for in the end, from the point of view of the quality of life in our city, as well as for the people for whom these services are vital. For this reason, we have decided to organize a protest flash mob this Saturday, to keep attention on Marghera alive and to continue to mobilize for our city”.

07/09/2024 Comitato Marghera Libera e Pensante Official Statement:
Today we decided to meet in front of the Marghera regional headquarters of the Directorate of Civil Protection, Security and Local Police to denounce the Veneto Region regarding its responsibilities in the management of the Ser.D., a fundamental service in the broader management of prevention and treatment services for addictions.
These failings have long weighed not only on the direct recipients of these services but also on the citizens who have to live with the problems connected to heroin dealing on a daily basis.
We have repeatedly denounced the situation of the ser.D., where the staff requires a massive investment in terms of medical personnel and operators in a historical period marked by the spread of heroin throughout the city.
The Brugnaro Administration, evidently more committed to safeguarding the private interests of the speculators and investors in the city, has never urged the Region to increase investments in the ser.D., a choice which is in line with the political agenda of this administration, which has dismantled the city’s welfare system by cutting services.
Faced with this situation and an administration that has completely lost any legitimacy, It’s time that citizens make their voices heard again!
